Enseoul is proud to showcase Susurrous, a solo exhibition by Bohyeon Hwang (b. 1992 KR) opening on Friday 17 January 2025. This exhibition delves into Hwang’s nuanced exploration of objects and their fluid presence within ambiguous spaces, creating a visual dialogue that challenges perception.

Hwang’s works traverse the boundaries between materiality and figurative ambiguity featuring objects that seem to dissolve their weight and function. As she notes “Objects lose their weight and function, becoming entities that float—elusive yet within reach. My work seeks to explore this paradox, inviting curiosity and reflection.” Her canvases transform the familiar into evocative forms that merge the tangible with the intangible.

Visual tactility is central to Hwang’s process. Her use of layered textures and surfaces elicits sensations reminiscent of materials like felt, velvet or sanded wood. These tactile surfaces create depth embodying the tension between smoothness and imperfection. As she elaborates “The tactile surfaces draw you in, yet their ambiguity creates a sense of detachment. The objects’ contours fade, merging the tangible with the imagined.”

The exhibition title, Susurrous—meaning whispering or rustling—reflects the narratives of objects as they find their own voices. Her canvases engage viewers with the unspoken dialogues of objects, transforming their stories through brushwork. Susurrous is Hwang’s exploration of the seen and unseen.
